Newton Energy Group (NEG) is developing a new generation of energy market modeling tools by combining advanced analytics with high performance computing technology. NEG’s mission is to deliver this new technology to a wide range of industry stakeholders. NEG staff is dedicated to achieving this mission by synthesizing its expertise in computer science with decades of experience in the analysis of energy markets design & operation, energy economics, and regulatory policy.

NEG is eager to support its expanding business by seeking a new member for its Data Team, which produces and maintains the data models used by NEG’s best-in-class power system simulation engine. As part of a small team of experts, the candidate will have the opportunity to tap into the decades of knowledge and experience from senior staff to grow their own knowledge and abilities. Responsibilities / Your Impact

  • Build, test, and analyze data models for U.S. and European power markets
  • Develop automation (mostly Python) to ensure data quality from source to product
  • Become an expert in one or more U.S. power markets
  • Support client efforts with case diagnosis and expert advice on power markets modeling
  • Identify and research new data sources and tools to propel the quality of NEG’s models

Required Qualifications / Your Background

  • Undergraduate degree in Engineering, Computer Science, Data Science, or similar field
  • A knack for good software and the habits that produce it
  • Excellent analytical skills in response to open-ended questions
  • Fluency in Python (or similar) and associated data science packages (pandas, numpy)
  • Ability to work efficiently on multiple, non-overlapping tasks with minimal supervision
  • Confidence in presenting technical content to both colleagues and clients
  • Passion for the renewable energy transition
  • Authorized to work in the U.S. (NEG is willing to sponsor work visas)

Preferred Qualifications

  • Knowledge of U.S. power market operations and planning
  • Experience contributing to large code bases, with particular preference for testing automation
  • M.S. or Ph.D. in engineering / computer science with focus on power systems
  • Working knowledge of Git and PyCharm
  • Experience with optimization
